★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 8,841 travellers on the most-booked Niagara day

Two countries, two shorelines and about nine ways to get closer. The Canadian side has the panorama, the American side puts you on the rocks, and the boat under the Horseshoe soaks both equally. These three carry more travellers than anything else at the border.

Which shore

Canadian side, for the full curve

6–9h· from $51· Toronto pickup

The Horseshoe only reads as a horseshoe from Ontario. Most day trips run out of Toronto, add the Skylon or the SkyWheel, and leave the boat as an option you should take.

How close

Into the basin, poncho on

20 min· from $35· seasonal

The boats run from roughly April to November and stop when the ice comes. You stand on an open deck in a thin poncho while the Horseshoe throws water at you. Nothing stays dry.

The other bank

American side, Cave of the Winds

2–4h· from $125· stairs and decks

Wooden walkways rebuilt every spring take you to the Hurricane Deck, a few metres from the Bridal Veil. Less panorama, far more weather in your face.

Ouzoud Waterfalls Guided Hike and Boat Trip

Travel from Marrakech to the 110-meter Ouzoud Waterfalls with a local guide such as Youssef, Hachimi, or Mohamed. Walk olive-grove trails, visit an argan oil cooperative, spot Barbary macaques, ride a small boat below the falls, and eat lunch overlooking the cascades. Expect a long drive and a moderate hike.

From the water

The best view of a waterfall is usually from a boat.

Catamarans into the Niagara basin, the park launch across Skradin bay to Krka, a rowing boat under the Ouzoud cascades, a zodiac at the foot of Iguazu. Getting on the water is how you trade a viewpoint for the noise and the spray.

Where the falls are

Six countries that put a waterfall inside a day trip.

A gorge in the Middle Atlas, travertine pools in Dalmatia, jungle drops above Ubud, glacial water off the Icelandic south coast, the limestone terraces of Jamaica, and the loudest border crossing in North America.

How close

Viewpoint, boardwalk, swim or abseil. Pick your distance.

The same waterfall sells four completely different days. Decide how wet you want to be, then pick the trip, because the price follows the distance more than the destination.

Season and flow

A waterfall in the wrong month is a wet rock.

Flow is the whole experience and it swings hard. Iceland and the Alps run hardest on summer melt. Southeast Asia and Jamaica fill up in the wet season and thin out by March. Victoria Falls is a wall of spray in April and a set of pools in October. Ask what the water is doing before you book the photograph you have in mind.

Bali

Bali hides its best falls twenty minutes off the Ubud road.

Tibumana drops into a bowl you can swim in. Tukad Cepung falls through a slot in the rock and lights up around mid morning. Tegenungan is the easy one, which is why it is the busy one. Most drivers will string two or three together with the rice terraces.

Morocco

Ouzoud is the biggest drop in North Africa and a three-hour drive.

The Oued el-Abid falls a hundred metres through red rock in three tiers, with Barbary macaques in the olive trees on the path down and rowing boats waiting at the bottom. The Ourika valley is the shorter version: an hour from Marrakech, seven small cascades, lunch by the river.

Worth the flight

Three waterfalls that are the reason for the trip.

Plenty of falls are a good afternoon. These three are the itinerary: a two-kilometre curtain on a jungle border, a mile of river going over a cliff, and a river that runs across its own limestone steps.

Argentina and Brazil

Iguazu Falls

Two hundred and seventy odd drops spread along nearly three kilometres of the Iguazu river, split between two countries. Brazil gives you the panorama in about half a day; Argentina gives you the walkways, the Devil’s Throat platform and a full day of them. Almost everybody who has time does both sides, and the zodiacs run underneath from either bank.

Zambezi border

Victoria Falls

A mile-wide sheet of the Zambezi dropping a hundred metres into a basalt slot, loud enough to be heard long before it is seen. High water from March to May means spray so heavy the falls disappear into their own cloud; by October the Zambian side has dried back far enough that people swim to the lip at Devil’s Pool.

Dalmatian travertine

Krka National Park

The Krka river builds its own dams out of dissolved limestone, so the falls at Skradinski buk are seventeen steps of travertine rather than one drop. Timber boardwalks run right over them, the park boat comes up from Skradin, and the old swimming beach at the bottom has been closed since 2021 despite what half the listings still say.

What it costs

What a day at the falls actually costs.

Every trip on the site, grouped by price. The gap is mostly distance: a Marrakech minibus and a Niagara premium tour are the same idea an order of magnitude apart.

Under $50

Shared minibuses out of Marrakech, Chiang Mai and Ubud. Half a day, a driver, a walk down and a swim.

$50–150

Full days with a park fee inside them: Krka with the boat, the Icelandic south coast, Niagara from Toronto.

$150 and up

Private cars, helicopter passes over Victoria Falls and Kauai, and the multi-day safaris built around Murchison.

Before you go

Four waterfall days that run on somebody else’s calendar.

Most falls are there whenever you arrive. These four are gated by a boat season, a park quota, a water level or a permit, and turning up hopeful is how people end up looking at a viewpoint from the car park.

  1. 01Niagara Falls USA: Maid of the Mist & Cave AdventureThe Niagara boats are pulled out of the water for winter. Roughly April to November, weather permitting, and the first warm weekend sells out.
  2. 02Krka Waterfalls Trip with Boat Cruise and SwimmingKrka charges a seasonal entry fee that roughly triples in July and August, and the park boat from Skradin runs to a timetable, not on demand.
  3. 03Foz do Iguaçu: Brazil/Argentina Sides Iguazu Falls Day TourThe Devil’s Throat walkway closes whenever the river runs too high, and both parks cap numbers in the peak months.
  4. 04Livingstone Island Tour & Devils PoolSwimming at the lip only happens at low water, broadly August to January, and the island slots are booked in fixed sittings.
